CASS: 37% of Urban Chinese are Middle-income Earners

China’s middle-income population in urban areas increased by 3.8% from 2000 and reached 230 million in 2009, accounting for 37% of the total urban population, according to data included in a report released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Aug 3. The consumption by middle-income urban dwellers accounted for 49.3% of the total consumption of all urban dwellers in 2009. According to the Blue Book of Cities in China - Annual Report on Urban Development of China No. 4 《中國城市發展報告No.4——聚焦民生》, the proportion of middle-income earners might exceed that of the lower-middle-income population for the first time in 2019.
