Zheng Minsheng, a former community doctor, was sentenced to death on Thursday for murdering eight students outside their primary school last month.

Zheng stabbed the eight children to death and injured five others at the gate of the Nanping Experimental Elementary School in Fujian province on March 23.

The trial at the Intermediate People's Court of Nanping began at 8am and lasted about four hours.

Relatives of the 13 children, as well as reporters from a dozen media organizations were present at the hearing.

As of April 6, the condition of the five pupils injured in the attack is no longer life-threatening and four of them have been transferred out of intensive care.

One of the seriously injured children, Zhang Xuexin, remains under observation in the intensive-care unit.

Nanping municipality has paid 260,000 yuan in compensation to the families of each of eight victims.
